Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar warned of strict legal action against transgender persons involved in forced collections or public harassment.
According to Sajjanar, the police had received a rising number of complaints from citizens in recent months. He said visiting homes under the guise of auspicious ceremonies and demanding money was unacceptable.
Further, Sajjanar warned that the police would jail anyone who took the law into their own hands. He added that criminal cases would permanently damage careers and personal futures.
The Hyderabad CP warning came during a special interaction with around 250 transgender persons. The meeting took place at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies auditorium in Ameerpet.
At the event, Sajjanar chaired the programme, while CID and Women Safety Wing Additional DGP Charu Sinha attended. Meanwhile, senior police officers interacted directly with participants and heard their grievances.
During the interaction, Sajjanar said frequent group clashes and dominance disputes among transgender groups caused law and order problems. In several cases, he said, such conflicts had also led to loss of life.
He also said the government was prioritising transgender welfare across Telangana. Accordingly, Sajjanar informed the gathering that the government would soon introduce a comprehensive welfare policy.
At the same time, he assured that the police department would support transgender persons who chose lawful and dignified livelihoods.
Hyderabad CP warning stressed lawful living and welfare access
Speaking next, Additional DGP Charu Sinha said the Women Safety Wing had set up a dedicated mechanism called ‘Pride Place’. Through this system, she said, officials aimed to address issues faced by transgender persons.
If anyone faced harassment, Charu Sinha said they could approach the wing without fear. Moreover, she stated that officials stood ready to listen and resolve complaints quickly.
She also urged the community to stay away from illegal activities. At the same time, she advised them to live with dignity in society.
Later, Hyderabad district transgender welfare additional director Rajender said Telangana had nearly 50,000 transgender persons. Therefore, he urged all of them to obtain identity cards issued by the central government.
According to Rajender, the cards were essential to access welfare schemes and reservation benefits. Additionally, he said officials were working to create corporate sector jobs for transgender persons.
