Harish Rao slams Congress over pending fee reimbursements, accuses Revanth govt of neglecting education
Hyderabad: BRS senior leader and MLA T. Harish Rao has accused the Congress government of crippling Telangana’s education system by delaying fee reimbursement payments. He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had failed to release funds, forcing colleges and students into crisis.
In a social media post, Harish Rao alleged that for the past two years, degree, postgraduate, engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA, and B.Ed institutions had been waiting for funds. According to him, nearly 13 lakh students are now facing an uncertain future, while several colleges have already closed due to financial stress.
Institutions face shutdown risk
Harish Rao said exams had been postponed, salaries were pending, and utility services were cut in many campuses. Students, he noted, were unable to obtain certificates because of the arrears. Despite protests, hunger strikes, and shutdown calls, he said the Chief Minister who also holds the education portfolio remained unresponsive.
Comparison with BRS government
Drawing a contrast, Harish Rao said that under the previous BRS government, fee reimbursements never stopped, even during demonetization or the COVID-19 pandemic. He claimed ₹20,000 crore was disbursed during K. Chandrashekar Rao’s nine-and-a-half-year rule.
In his view, the Congress government allowed arrears to mount to such an extent that institutions were shutting down.
Criticism of spending priorities
Harish Rao alleged that the government diverted resources to what he called “commission-driven projects.” He pointed to tenders worth thousands of crores for roads, bridges, irrigation works, and beautification projects, claiming these were designed to generate kickbacks.
“When there is no money for salaries or reimbursements, how does the government find ₹2.5 lakh crore for tenders?” he asked.
Broken promises and false claims
The MLA also accused Revanth Reddy of presenting false data in the Assembly. He said the Chief Minister claimed that two lakh more students had joined government schools, while UDISE data showed 47,000 fewer enrollments this year.
He further alleged that Gurukul schools were being sidelined out of “spite against KCR.” Moreover, he said the government had failed to honor its Assembly promise of releasing dues in phases. Even after contractors staged protests twice for unpaid bills, Harish Rao claimed, the government did not act.
Demand for urgent action
Calling the situation “tragic,” Harish Rao demanded immediate release of fee reimbursement dues, particularly for students from SC, ST, BC, and minority backgrounds.
“As Education Minister and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will go down in history for damaging the education system in record time. Even now, he must act to protect the future of students,” Harish Rao said.
