HYDERABAD: Former Minister and senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao has criticised the Congress government for its alleged failure to protect Telangana’s water rights, leading to a worsening drinking water crisis in the state. He accused the administration of negligence in managing water resources, which has adversely affected both irrigation and drinking water supplies.
In a recent statement, Harish Rao highlighted that Andhra Pradesh has been diverting 10,000 cusecs of water daily through the Nagarjuna Sagar Right Bank Canal for the past three months, totaling 646 TMC in the current water year. He questioned the Congress government’s inaction regarding this issue, stating, “The Congress government must come out of its deep slumber before Telangana faces a severe water crisis.”
Harish Rao expressed concern that if these unauthorised water diversions continue unchecked, the Nagarjuna Sagar ayacut in Telangana will suffer, potentially leading to a drinking water crisis in Hyderabad and other regions. He criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy for their lack of response to Andhra Pradesh’s exploitation of Telangana’s water resources.
The former minister also pointed out that Telangana, once a model for groundwater conservation under the previous BRS government, is now facing a severe water crisis. He attributed this situation to the current administration’s mismanagement and failure to implement effective water conservation policies. Harish Rao emphasised the need for immediate action to prevent further deterioration and called on the Congress government to take responsibility for its shortcomings.
