Harish Rao blames Congress for artificial water crisis in Telangana

HYDERABAD: Former minister and BRS leader Harish Rao has expressed concern over the depletion of groundwater levels and worsening water scarcity across several areas in the state amid the summer season.

He remarked that while farmers had previously struggled for irrigation water, the general public is now being forced to suffer for drinking water. Rao said that under Congress rule, agricultural fields are drying up and people’s lives are turning into deserts.

He criticised the Congress leadership for its lack of foresight and negligence, accusing the government of failing to conserve project waters, replenish reservoirs, or improve groundwater levels. He further alleged that the Mission Bhagiratha scheme is no longer supplying water as intended.

Rao pointed out that while former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao had ensured the installation of taps at every household under Mission Bhagiratha, current Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has been unable to sustain the scheme. He lamented that the return of water pots and plastic drums on the streets is reminiscent of the pre-Telangana era.

He drew a sharp contrast between what he termed the “soulful” leadership of the Telangana movement and the current “heartless” governance, saying this was the clear difference between a leader who valued Telangana’s interests and one who did not.

Harish Rao accused the Congress of engineering an artificial drought, stating that this was not a natural crisis but a consequence of the party’s misgovernance. He described the ongoing situation as a “drought of tears” brought on by the failures of Revanth Reddy’s administration.

He urged the Chief Minister and his ministers to stop spreading lies and instead focus on ensuring a regular supply of drinking water to households.
