Hyderabad: The Telangana government ordered strict action against the unauthorised display of “Press”, Human Rights Commission-related titles, government emblems and misleading symbols on vehicles across the State.
In a memo dated January 22, 2026, the Department of Information and Public Relations said the Transport Commissioner issued the directions after a Karnataka High Court judgment. The court ordered the removal of unauthorised flags, emblems, names, symbols, stickers, seals and logos from vehicles.
According to the memo, such displays violate Rule 50 and Rule 51 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. These rules regulate the form and manner of vehicle registration marks. In addition, the memo cited Regulation 36 of the Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations, 2017.
Govt orders action against misuse of ‘Press’ symbols on vehicles
Following the court order, the Transport Commissioner directed enforcement agencies to curb misuse on vehicles. This included Advocate and Press stickers. It also covered misleading Human Rights-related titles that project false official status.
Meanwhile, the department clarified that only media personnel accredited by the Information and Public Relations Department could use the term “Press” on vehicles. Otherwise, such use amounts to impersonation. Moreover, vehicles must not display “Press” markings on registration plates under any circumstances.
Therefore, the government instructed all District Public Relations Officers to publicise the enforcement drive widely. At the same time, it asked them to ensure strict implementation of the legal provisions. Further, officials were told to curb misuse of press symbols in their respective districts.
