GHMC’s new model footpath features solar power, green design

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started building a model footpath in Jubilee Hills. The new walkway combines green technology with an inclusive design to improve pedestrian experience.

Smart footpath project begins in Jubilee Hills

The footpath runs from Ramanaidu Studio at Road No. 79/82 Junction to BVB Junction at CVR Channel, Road No. 82. It falls under Circle-18 in the Khairathabad Zone. Construction began on November 24 and will finish within four months.

The project costs ₹1.68 crore and covers 1,000 meters on one side and 500 meters on the other. GHMC aims to improve pedestrian safety, ease foot traffic, and upgrade the street’s appearance.

Recycled plastic and solar-powered design

A key highlight is the use of eco-friendly paver blocks. These blocks are made from 65–70% recycled plastic waste, such as MLP, LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, and PET. They offer strong durability with over 35 MPa of compressive strength, making them suitable for crowded walkways.

Each block follows a zig-zag modular design, sized 225 mm × 112 mm × 50 mm. This not only adds strength but also helps reduce plastic waste in landfills. In addition, GHMC is installing a 10 kWp solar grid to power the footpath, supporting Hyderabad’s shift to clean energy.

Design ensures accessibility for all

To help the visually impaired, GHMC is adding tactile pavers and guidance bars. These features make it easier for all pedestrians to walk safely. The Corporation said it is committed to building spaces that are friendly, accessible, and barrier-free.

This project is part of GHMC’s broader mission. It aims to increase walkability, support non-motorised travel, and promote green urban planning across the city. Officials said they are speeding up work to finish the project on time and deliver a smart, safe, and sustainable pedestrian zone.
