Government plans flying school at Mamnoor Airport in Warangal

Hyderabad: The State government has initiated plans to establish a flying school at Mamnoor Airport in Warangal to address pilot training constraints in Hyderabad.

Due to heavy air traffic in Hyderabad, trainee pilots are struggling to secure required flying hours. Increasing aircraft movement at Shamshabad and Dundigal, along with rising private aircraft and helicopter operations at Begumpet, has made ATC clearances difficult.

As a result, trainees receive limited flying slots. Consequently, completing mandatory flying hours has become challenging, and institutes cannot accommodate more students.

In this backdrop, the government shifted focus to Mamnoor Airport. Officials assessed that Warangal offers lower traffic density and longer flying windows, which would help trainees complete required hours efficiently.

Experts recently stated at the Wings India summit in Hyderabad that the country would need nearly 10,000 pilots in the coming years. Therefore, permitting flying schools at Mamnoor Airport could meet rising demand.

Further, Warangal’s proximity to Hyderabad would allow instructors to commute easily. Officials believe the city could emerge as a dedicated pilot training hub in the coming years.

Lower living costs in Warangal would also reduce financial burden on students. This factor, they said, would make training more affordable.

Mamnoor Airport to expand with cargo and MRO services

Meanwhile, authorities also decided to develop Warangal and Adilabad airports for cargo operations and aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services. This move aims to reduce pressure on Shamshabad airport.

By routing imports and exports through these airports, officials expect improved logistics support for farmers and traders. Surrounding districts are largely agriculture-based, which could generate steady cargo demand.

Additionally, plans include setting up facilities for aircraft maintenance and overhauling at these locations. Such activity, officials said, would attract aviation-related operations and increase air traffic gradually.

Development of Mamnoor Airport and Adilabad airport is also expected to generate direct and indirect employment for local youth. Moreover, expansion of aviation services could stimulate business growth in the region.
