Eatala Rajender demands release of Jawahar Nagar protesters

Hyderabad: BJP MP Eatala Rajender on Saturday demanded the immediate release of people arrested during the Jawahar Nagar protest against the dump yard. He met the detainees at Shamirpet Police Station. He alleged that the government had suppressed a peaceful protest.

Eatala said the Jawahar Nagar dump yard initially handled waste generated by local residents. Meanwhile, he alleged that authorities now dumped garbage generated by nearly two crore people across the GHMC limits at the Jawahar Nagar and Balaji Nagar sites.

He claimed no other place in the world concentrated such a large volume of waste at a single location. He also said the government had promised to treat leachate after sustained public protests.

Jawahar Nagar protest raises dump yard concerns

The BJP MP alleged that authorities processed only about 3,500 metric tonnes of waste daily for power generation. He said nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of waste reached the site every day. According to him, around 6,500 metric tonnes accumulated daily.

Eatala alleged that the dump yard polluted groundwater across a 30-kilometre radius. He said residents of Balaji Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Dammaiguda, Keesara, Nagaram and Ghatkesar were enduring foul odour and pollution.

Referring to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Eatala said the latter had opposed the dump yard and approached the Supreme Court when he represented the area as an MP. Further, he alleged that the government had failed to act despite promising a permanent solution nearly two months ago.

The BJP leader alleged that police entered the houses of all-party and Joint Action Committee leaders in the early hours before detaining them. He claimed officers shifted hundreds of protesters to police stations in Keesara, Ghatkesar, Shamirpet, Bollaram and Tukaramgate.

Eatala said arrests and criminal cases would not stop the movement. Additionally, he urged the government to establish multiple dump yards across the city instead of concentrating waste at one location. He also demanded a zero-pollution, zero-waste system at Jawahar Nagar and Balaji Nagar.
