Hyderabad: Telangana DGP Shivdhar Reddy on Monday announced a compensation package for the family of Constable Pramod Kumar, who was killed by rowdy-sheeter Riaz. The package includes ₹1 crore in support, a government job, and a house site.
₹1 crore relief, job, and house site for family
DGP Reddy said the family would receive ₹1 crore, with ₹16 lakh from police security welfare and ₹8 lakh from the police welfare fund. One family member will get a government job.
He added that the state would continue paying Pramod Kumar’s salary until his official retirement age. The government will also allot a 300-square-yard house plot to his family. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is expected to announce these benefits at the upcoming police martyrs’ commemoration event.
Riaz shot dead while trying to escape, says DGP
DGP Reddy explained the events that led to Riaz’s death. While in custody at Nizamabad Government Hospital, Riaz tried to snatch a constable’s weapon and escape. He attempted to fire the gun during his breakout attempt.
Police responded with force to protect themselves and civilians nearby. “If Riaz had fired, innocent lives could have been lost,” Reddy said, justifying the encounter.
Riaz murdered Constable Pramod Kumar on October 17
On October 17, Riaz stabbed Constable Pramod Kumar while officers were escorting him to the police station. Kumar suffered severe injuries and died during treatment.
Following the incident, Telangana Police launched a massive manhunt. They arrested Riaz on October 19 from an old lorry cabin on the city’s outskirts. Already injured in a prior altercation, he was admitted to the hospital. The fatal encounter occurred after his escape attempt.
The incident sparked public outcry and strong reactions. Many locals welcomed the swift action and paid tributes to the fallen constable.
