Hyderabad: The path of Cyclone Montha has shifted toward North Telangana, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an alert for extreme weather across the region and adjoining South Bastar.
Depression strengthens over Godavari basin
Though downgraded to a deep depression, the system still poses significant weather threats. IMD’s latest update shows the remnants veering northward, contrary to earlier forecasts predicting east coast dissipation.
As the depression interacts with regional moisture, it is showing signs of slight strengthening. IMD expects its impact to intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours. The storm is now tracking directly over the Godavari River basin, from Bhadrachalam in the east to Karimnagar in the northwest.
Wind and flash flood risks
Winds between 28 and 33 kmph are expected. While moderate, they can still bring down trees, disrupt electricity lines, and make travel difficult, particularly in flood-prone areas. Areas still recovering from last week’s downpours are at increased risk of flash floods.
The heaviest danger remains the rainfall. IMD predicts that isolated pockets could receive over 100 mm of rain.
