Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday strongly refuted criticism from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) over paddy procurement, accusing the opposition of spreading misinformation and attempting to undermine the Congress-led government’s efforts.
Speaking at a press briefing, Reddy revealed that Telangana had procured 60.61 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of paddy during the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season as of 22 May – a significant increase from the 36.63 LMT recorded during the same period in Rabi 2022–23 under BRS governance.
“Figures don’t lie,” he stated, emphasising that the current government’s procurement efforts far outpaced those of the previous administration. He alleged that BRS leaders were intentionally misleading the public to divert attention from their past failures in handling procurement operations.
Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that the Congress government had implemented a more structured and compassionate approach to procurement, establishing thousands of centres closer to farmlands and ensuring prompt payments to farmers. He noted that the government had also instructed all District Collectors to accept rain-affected and moisture-laden paddy to prevent farmer distress.
“In contrast to the long queues and logistical delays farmers faced under the BRS regime, our government is ensuring that procurement proceeds smoothly and equitably,” he said.
Reiterating the Congress government’s commitment, Uttam Kumar Reddy assured that the administration would continue its procurement drive until every last grain was collected, reaffirming its resolve to support the farming community without discrimination.
