MP Chamala Kiran accuses Harish Rao of vilifying KCR, blames BRS for irrigation missteps

Hyderabad: Congress MP Chamala Kiran on Friday alleged that BRS leader T. Harish Rao is deliberately attempting to portray former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao as a villain over irrigation issues.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Kiran said the BRS leadership had politicised the issue of water while lacking basic technical understanding in executing major projects. Referring to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, he said its collapse had exposed the reality to the people of Telangana.

He demanded that KCR clarify what he said at the 2016 CWC meeting and held him responsible for what he called the “collapse of Kaleshwaram due to ignorance.”

Chamala Kiran further accused KCR of compromising Telangana’s water interests by holding multiple rounds of discussions with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He said Harish Rao’s stance emboldened Andhra leaders to consider diverting Krishna waters to Banakacherla.

Questioning the silence of BRS on Krishna water allocations, Kiran said leaders who frequently raise their voices over Godavari water are noticeably silent when it comes to Krishna. “Harish Rao is driven more by emotion than content,” he remarked, alleging that BRS leaders cannot digest seeing Revanth Reddy as Chief Minister.

He also took aim at Harish Rao’s assumption that only he and KCR understand the water issue. “It was KCR who gave away Telangana’s water to Andhra,” he said, adding that the dispute over Banakacherla began during Harish Rao’s tenure as irrigation minister.

Referring to Revanth Reddy’s statement that the state would approach the Supreme Court if needed on Banakacherla, Kiran said this demonstrated the current CM’s commitment.

He criticised the BRS for walking out of an all-party meeting meant to adopt a unanimous resolution on the Banakacherla issue, accusing them of trying to exploit the situation after losing their base.
