Hyderabad: Police on Saturday detained several Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators and leaders when they staged a protest outside the Agriculture Commissioner’s office in Hyderabad, demanding immediate supplies of urea to farmers. The detained leaders, including MLAs and MLCs, were shifted to nearby police stations.
The BRS lawmakers accused the Congress government of failing to resolve the urea crisis. Earlier in the day, they submitted a representation to the Agriculture Commissioner, urging the state to make adequate fertilizer stocks available as the rabi season picks up. They stressed that the protest was not political but intended to support farmers struggling to secure supplies.
BRS blames Congress for urea shortage
Holding placards, BRS activists accused the Congress of forcing farmers to wait in queues even during festivals. “The government has left farmers stranded at a critical stage of the crop cycle,” the leaders said.
Protesters raised slogans such as “Ganapati Bappa Morya – Kavalayya Urea” and “Revanth Dosham – Raitanna ki Mosam,” directly blaming Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for the shortage. They demanded urea supplies reach every district without delay and accused the Congress of deceiving farmers.
The agitation added to political tensions in the state. With crops already damaged by unseasonal rains, the shortage has intensified the blame game between the ruling Congress and the opposition BRS. The government, however, maintains that the crisis is part of a nationwide shortage.
