HYDERABAD: Amid growing demands for increased reservations, BRS MLA Gangula Kamalakar threw a direct challenge at Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, questioning his ability to secure the BC Reservation Bill’s approval in Parliament. Kamalakar’s bold remarks came during a heated discussion in the Telangana Assembly, where he declared that the responsibility of getting the bill passed at the national level now rests solely on the chief minister.
Referring to Tamil Nadu’s 69% reservation model, Kamalakar urged the Telangana government to take a similar approach. He emphasized that while several states have attempted to exceed the 50% reservation cap, only Tamil Nadu has successfully implemented it with legal backing.
Highlighting a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that allows for reservations beyond 50% under extraordinary circumstances, Kamalakar pointed out that the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, pushed through the policy despite legal hurdles. He asserted that Telangana’s BC communities deserve the same level of representation and that it is now up to Revanth Reddy to prove his commitment to their welfare.
His statements have intensified political pressure on the ruling Congress government, with opposition leaders questioning whether Revanth Reddy will take decisive action or let the bill remain a symbolic gesture.
