BJP vows to mark Sept 17 as Telangana Liberation Day if voted to power

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday said the party would officially observe September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day if it wins the upcoming Assembly elections. He made the announcement while addressing a meeting at Gundrampally in Nalgonda district.

Rao paid tribute to villagers who resisted the Razakars during the Nizam era. He recalled the killing of 26 locals and the atrocities committed against women. “Gundrampally stands as a symbol of defiance against tyranny,” he said, noting that the village had united to revolt against the Nizam’s regime.

BJP targets Congress, BRS over ‘vote-bank politics’

Rao demanded that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recognize the day officially if he truly values the sacrifices of Telangana’s freedom fighters. He criticised former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao for allegedly abandoning the promise to mark the day after coming to power, claiming it was done to appease minority vote banks.

He further accused both the Congress and the BRS of acting under the influence of the AIMIM. Rao described the two parties as “twins of AIMIM,” linking the MIM to its Razakar-era founder, Kasim Razvi.

Rao pointed out that Maharashtra and Karnataka observe September 17 as Liberation Day and said Telangana’s past governments had avoided it due to political calculations.

Opposes Muslim quota in local body polls

On the issue of reservations, Rao opposed the Congress government’s reported plan to introduce a 10% quota for Muslims in local body elections. He called the proposal “unjust” and said the BJP would resist any such move.

Rao also took aim at BRS leader K. Kavitha, alleging she had exposed internal corruption by naming senior party leaders in connection with the Kaleshwaram project.

BJP holds rally, honours martyrs’ families

Earlier, BJP leaders welcomed Rao at Lingojiguda and Pantangi toll gate. A rally was held from Gundrampally to JSK Gardens, the venue of the public meeting. State leaders including MLC Anji Reddy, BJP Vice-President Dr. G. Manohar Reddy, and former MP Dr. B. Narsaiah joined the event.

Rao later honoured the families of those who had resisted the Nizam’s rule, reaffirming the BJP’s commitment to remembering Telangana’s liberation history.
