Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly opposed the Telangana government’s draft proposal to expand Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. Additionally, they oppose increasing divisions from 150 to 300, calling the move anti-people and structurally flawed. In response, the BJP slammed the GHMC delimitation process.
A BJP delegation from the party’s Delimitation Monitoring Committee met GHMC Commissioner. They raised objections over what they described as irregularities and inconsistencies in the draft. The delegation included former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, BJP state general secretary Dr. Gautam Rao, ex-mayor Banda Karthika Reddy, and other leaders.
BJP alleges political agenda behind delimitation
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Prabhakar alleged several proposed divisions overlap two Assembly constituencies or span across different revenue districts. “Is population the criterion, is area the criterion, or is voter strength the basis? Officials failed to give clear answers,” he said, with BJP slamming GHMC delimitation issues.
He further claimed that the delimitation draft may have been outsourced to a private agency. This contrasts with being prepared by GHMC officials. He criticised the government for ignoring nearly 10,000 objections and suggestions from the public.
Prabhakar also alleged that the true intent behind the expansion was to secure large foreign loans. This was rather than to improve urban governance. He accused the ruling party of trying to centralise power from political headquarters like Darussalam and Gandhi Bhavan while BJP slams GHMC delimitation for such political maneuvers.
He warned that BJP would soon launch a public agitation against the draft. They aim to expose the government’s “anti-people and disorganised” approach to civic administration.
