Hyderabad: BC JAC chairman Jajula Srinivas Goud on Tuesday urged the Centre to approve the 42% BC reservations Bill passed by the Telangana Assembly. He appealed to the Union Government to amend the Constitution to make the Bill legally valid, as it crosses the 50% quota cap.
Leading a delegation in Parliament, BRS MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra accompanied Goud to meet Union Minister for Social Justice Virendra Kumar. They submitted a memorandum with five key demands, placing the reservations Bill at the top of the list.
Goud said the Bill was the outcome of years of public struggle. He pointed out that Telangana had already conducted a caste census and created a dedicated BC Commission. According to him, the Assembly passed the Bill with support from all major parties, including the BJP, TRS, CPI, MIM, and TJS.
BC JAC demands Centre pass BC reservations Bill without delay
Ravichandra criticised the systemic neglect of BCs in education, jobs, and politics. He argued that although BCs make up a significant portion of Telangana’s population, they continue to face injustice. He reminded the Minister that a private member’s Bill seeking national approval had already been introduced.
Moreover, the delegation urged the Centre to remove the 50% ceiling on reservations imposed by the Supreme Court’s Indira Sawhney ruling. They insisted that a constitutional amendment would clear legal hurdles and help enforce the new quota levels.
In response, Minister Virendra Kumar said the Centre would carefully examine the matter. He stated that the government was not against BC reservations. Furthermore, he confirmed that a caste census would be conducted along with the national population census. He assured the leaders that he would personally discuss the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
