Bamruknuddoula Lake set to reopen as restoration enters final phase

Hyderabad: Restoration work at the historic Bamruknuddoula Lake in the Old City advanced into its final stage, and officials said the waterbody would open to the public in 15 days. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the progress on Tuesday and reviewed key structures created under the development effort.

He examined the strengthened bund, inlets and outlets and checked the newly built approach roads on three sides. He asked officials to ensure easy access for residents. In addition, he directed them to plant medicinal and shade-giving trees to improve greenery around the lake. Entrances and gazebos, he said, must reflect Islamic architectural style.

Ranganath told teams to complete walking tracks, lighting, play areas, seating zones, open gyms and parks without delay. He also instructed them to link all CCTV cameras to HYDRAA headquarters to support continuous monitoring. These steps, therefore, would help strengthen safety and improve the visitor experience.

He noted that Bamruknuddoula Lake had once shrunk to 4.12 acres due to encroachments. However, it has now extended to 18 acres after removal operations carried out last August. Consequently, the restoration would support flood control and boost groundwater levels. Residents, meanwhile, welcomed the revival and said the lake was regaining its old charm.

Built in 1770 by Nawab Rukn-ud-Daula, the lake holds significant heritage value. Residents recalled that its water was once used for perfumes and medicinal needs. They added that the ongoing restoration had brought new life to the Old City and praised the state government and HYDRAA for their efforts.
