Amazon plans second round of layoffs, up to 15,000 jobs at risk

Hyderabad: Amazon plans to begin a second round of Amazon layoffs next week as part of its decision to cut 30,000 corporate jobs.

The company may remove around 15,000 employees in this phase. The layoffs will affect teams in Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and human resources, including the People Experience and Technology division.

Amazon executed the first phase of layoffs in October last year. During that round, the company cut about 14,000 jobs. The 90-day notice period for those employees ends on Monday.

Amazon layoffs to impact key business divisions

With the notice period ending, Amazon may start the next phase of layoffs from Tuesday. However, sources said the company could still revise the plan.

During the earlier layoffs, internal discussions pointed to the growing role of artificial intelligence. However, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy later clarified that the company did not take the decision due to financial pressure or AI-led restructuring.

He said Amazon wants to reduce bureaucracy and remove unnecessary management layers. The leadership aims to streamline internal processes and speed up decision-making.

If Amazon completes the planned 30,000 job cuts, the move will mark the largest layoff exercise in the company’s three-decade history. In 2022, Amazon cut about 27,000 jobs.

Even then, the proposed cuts make up about 10 per cent of Amazon’s corporate workforce. The number remains small compared with the company’s total employee strength of around 1.58 million.
