Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Karimnagar on Wednesday as ABVP activists launched a protest outside the residence of Minister Ponnam Prabhakar. They demanded immediate clearance of pending fee reimbursement dues and early deposit of scholarships into student accounts.

ABVP protests outside minister’s residence

Dozens of protesters gathered near the minister’s house and shouted slogans against the government. Soon after, police tried to block their march, leading to a heated exchange. As a result, a brief scuffle broke out between activists and police personnel. Eventually, officers detained several protesters and shifted them to the local police station.

The protest added fuel to the ongoing row over fee reimbursement arrears. The Federation of Private Educational Institutions had already warned of an indefinite college shutdown if ₹900 crore in dues were not released by November 1. Meanwhile, tensions grew among students worried about their academic future.

Colleges warn of closure as pressure mounts

ABVP leaders said students were struggling because scholarships had not been credited for months. Moreover, they accused the state of neglecting higher education funding. Consequently, several student groups joined the protest, calling for urgent government action.

In response, college managements urged officials to release funds quickly to prevent disruption to classes. Additionally, they appealed to the education department to ensure that reimbursement payments continue without delay.

Government reviews situation

Officials said the government was reviewing the pending bills. Furthermore, they added that steps were underway to release the funds soon. Therefore, authorities hoped to defuse the situation before the deadline set by the colleges.
