Hyderabad: A woman from Hyderabad died by suicide after being defrauded of ₹1 lakh in a fake work-from-home job scam operated via the Telegram app. The victim, Anusha, originally from Kanchusthambam Palem in West Godavari district, was living in KPHB Colony with her husband, Venkanna Babu.
According to police, Anusha received a message on Telegram offering her a work-from-home job. She initially paid ₹1,000 as a registration fee and was told she had earned a return of ₹7,000. When she requested the payout, the scammers demanded additional payments to process the withdrawal.
Believing the claims, she sold her gold and made multiple transfers, eventually losing nearly ₹1 lakh. Despite repeated attempts, the fraudsters stopped responding.
Overwhelmed by financial loss and emotional distress, Anusha left a suicide note urging others not to fall into similar traps through Telegram. She then hanged herself.
KPHB police registered a case following a complaint by her husband and have launched an investigation into the cyber fraud.
