Telangana govt appoints 20 trans persons as Metro security guards

Hyderabad: In a landmark move for social inclusion and dignity, the Telangana government on Tuesday inducted 20 transgender persons as security guards in Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), marking a significant step toward empowerment and equality.

Minister for SC, ST, Minorities, Disabled and Transgender Welfare Adluri Laxman Kumar handed over the appointment letters at his chambers. “Transgenders are not lesser beings. They deserve a life of self-respect and equal opportunity,” he said, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to uplift marginalised communities.

The Minister highlighted that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had earlier engaged transgender individuals previously seen at traffic junctions seeking alms—as traffic regulators. “This appointment in the Metro is another milestone under the Chief Minister’s inclusive leadership,” Laxman Kumar said.

The recruitment process drew nearly 400 applicants. From these, skilled and eligible candidates were shortlisted and selected.

“This isn’t just employment. It’s a platform to inspire thousands and prove one’s potential,” the Minister added.

Women and Child Welfare & SC Development Secretary Anita Ramachandran noted that social attitudes toward transgender people are beginning to shift. “Even small steps can spark broader societal change. If you work sincerely, recognition will follow,” she said.

Telangana has already launched several welfare initiatives for the transgender community, including counselling rooms in hospitals, Maitri mental health clinics, identity cards, skill training, and financial assistance without banking prerequisites.

Ramachandran added that global companies like Google and Microsoft have shown interest in hiring transgender individuals. “This Metro initiative could trigger a broader shift in both public and private sector employment,” she observed.

Others present at the event included Disabled Welfare Director Shailaja, SIS India Ltd executive Girish Pandey, Deer Bandhu Parents’ Association representative Mukund Mal, Varghese Tekkanath of Mount Font Social Institution, and Trans Welfare founder Vasavi.
