Telangana SEC enforces 48-hour silence period ahead of municipal polls

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Election Commission on Monday announced enforcement of a 48-hour silence period ahead of polling for urban local body elections scheduled on February 11, directing all political parties and candidates to strictly comply with election rules.

According to a press note issued by the Commission, the silence period came into force from the evening of February 9 and would remain effective until the close of polling on February 11. The Commission said the restrictions applied across all municipalities and municipal corporations going to polls.

During this period, the Commission prohibited public meetings, processions, roadshows, and any form of electioneering. It also banned the use of loudspeakers and campaign-related activities intended to influence voters.

Municipal polls silence period and restrictions

As part of the silence period, the Commission ordered the closure of liquor shops, bars, and toddy shops within polling areas. It said the restriction aimed to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful polling process.

The Commission urged political parties, candidates, and the public to cooperate with election authorities. It warned that violations of the silence period would invite action under election rules.

The press note reiterated that strict enforcement of the silence period was essential to uphold free and fair elections. It also instructed district authorities and police officials to monitor compliance closely until polling concluded.
