Telangana renames Raj Bhavan as Lok Bhavan

Hyderabad: The Telangana government renamed the Governor’s official residence as Lok Bhavan, replacing the earlier title of Raj Bhavan. Officials said the new name strengthened democratic values as the nation moved towards a Viksit Bharat. They directed all departments to use the updated term in records, correspondence and future communication.

The change followed a direction issued by the Union Home Ministry on 25 November 2025. That communication cited the 2024 Conference of Governors, where participants recommended dropping the Raj Bhavan title because it reflected a colonial imprint. The ministry asked every state to adopt the Lok Bhavan nomenclature without delay.

The Home Ministry instructed Governor’s establishments across the country to apply the new title in all administrative work. It also asked Lieutenant Governors to use “Lok Niwas” for their official residences. State departments received directions to update ongoing files, correct existing templates and ensure complete consistency in future documents.

Telangana officials said the revised name supported a broader effort to promote a people-centric expression of constitutional authority. They confirmed that every institutional reference involving the Governor’s residence would now carry the Lok Bhavan designation.
