Hyderabad: Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has urged the Centre to immediately resolve pending approvals. These are related to crucial irrigation projects in the Krishna and Godavari river basins.
In a letter submitted by State Irrigation Secretary Rahul Bojja to Union Jal Shakti Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao and Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairman Anupam Prasad in New Delhi, the minister requested speedy clearance of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and necessary permissions. This was requested with farmers’ welfare in mind.
Palamuru–Rangareddy and Sammakka Sagar projects await nod
Reddy specifically sought early approval for the DPR of Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme’s first phase. It aims to utilise 45 TMC of water. He expressed concern that delays were hurting backward regions and escalating project costs.
He also pointed out that the Sammakka Sagar DPR is still pending clearance from the CWC’s Irrigation Planning Directorate and urged for swift approval.
Demands action on Krishna water tribunal, Almatti dam, and Polavaram link
Reddy appealed for expediting proceedings of the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal (Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal-2) to secure Telangana’s water share. He opposed Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram–Banakacharla link project, calling it illegal and harmful to Telangana’s interests.
The minister raised objections to Karnataka’s move to increase the height of Almatti Dam through land acquisition. He stated that it violates a Supreme Court stay and could threaten Telangana’s rightful Krishna water allocation.
Seeks Central aid under PMKSY-AIBP
Reddy urged approvals and central funding under PMKSY–AIBP for several drought-prone and tribal area projects. These include Pranahita–Chevella, Narayanpet–Kodangal, Sitarama–Seethamma Sagar, Mukteshwar (Chinna Kaleshwaram), Modikunta Vagu, and Chanaka–Korata.
The letter stressed that the Centre must act swiftly on irrigation matters to ensure timely benefits for Telangana’s farmers.
