Hyderabad: The Telangana cabinet on Monday approved a draft gig workers’ bill to regulate digital aggregator platforms and safeguard the rights of gig and informal workers across the state.
The proposed law will require all aggregator platforms to register their workforce and appoint grievance officers. The bill introduces a structured legal framework to extend social security and formal protections to platform-based workers.
Government officials said the legislation will include data collection on gig workers and mandate welfare measures such as insurance, financial aid, and dedicated dispute resolution systems. The state is also considering placing designated officers either within aggregators or in government departments to ensure direct redressal access.
The bill follows consultations between state officials and the Gig Workers’ Union, which has led campaigns across Telangana. Union members stressed the lack of legal backing for most gig workers and urged swift legislative action to guarantee dignity and job security.
At a recent meeting in Hyderabad, 45 to 50 gig workers, including Swiggy delivery personnel, raised concerns about pay, security, and working conditions. Officials acknowledged the grievances and assured workers that more meetings will follow to resolve issues in phases.
With cabinet approval secured, the bill will move to the Legislative Assembly. The government expects the law, once enacted, to offer lasting legal recognition to lakhs of gig workers. Officials also stated that they aim to position the bill as a legislative model for other Indian states.
