Supreme Court to hear petitions on Telangana MLA defection case

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court is likely to hear two separate petitions on Monday related to the defection of Telangana MLAs and delays in their disqualification. One of the cases involves a contempt petition filed by BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) against the Telangana Assembly Speaker.

The second petition, filed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretary, seeks a specific timeline for adjudicating disqualification petitions against MLAs who switched parties.

The hearings come amid increasing political and legal pressure over the status of defected MLAs. KTR is alleging inaction by the Speaker on long-pending disqualification proceedings.

KTR moves contempt plea as Speaker delays disqualification rulings

KTR’s petition accuses the Speaker of failing to act on pleas against the Telangana MLAs defection in a reasonable timeframe. He argues this inaction violates constitutional duties and Supreme Court directions. The Assembly’s petition seeks judicial direction to establish a deadline for resolving such cases.

The matter is expected to be heard by a bench comprising Justices overseeing constitutional and electoral issues.
