The SLBC Tunnel rescue operation enters its fifth day as efforts continue to locate eight trapped individuals. Waterlogging, mud accumulation, and structural instability pose serious challenges to the rescue teams.
HYDERABAD: The rescue operation to locate eight individuals trapped inside the SLBC (Srisailam Left Bank Canal) tunnel is ongoing, with teams working through multiple obstacles. Waterlogging, heavy mud accumulation, and the absence of electricity in the affected area have significantly hampered the rescue efforts.
Waterlogging and Mud Pose Major Challenges
Rescue teams are facing extreme difficulties due to the conditions inside the tunnel. According to a report by the National Geographic Survey Agency, a massive water body exists above the accident site, making it impossible to access the tunnel from the top. The report also warns that any disturbance to the surrounding structure could lead to a collapse.
Additionally, stagnant water continues to rise in the tunnel, complicating the operation. Mud has accumulated extensively in the affected sections, creating further obstacles. The lack of electricity inside the tunnel is also impacting the efficiency of the rescue teams, who are struggling to navigate and carry out operations under these conditions.
Ministers Review Rescue Efforts
In light of these challenges, Telangana ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy held a meeting with senior officials at the tunnel site to assess the situation and strategize the next steps. Discussions focused on overcoming the structural risks and ensuring a safe and effective rescue operation.
Clearing the Final Section of the Tunnel
The rescue operation has now entered its fifth day. Teams have managed to clear the last 40 meters of the obstructed tunnel section. However, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) remains stuck due to an estimated 7 to 9 meters of accumulated mud. Clearing this blockage is critical to reaching the trapped individuals.
Experts have cautioned that drilling in unlined sections of the tunnel is highly risky, as further collapses could occur at any moment. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that the rescue teams proceed with extreme caution.
The operation remains challenging, but efforts continue to bring the trapped individuals to safety as soon as possible.
