Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has accused the Congress-led Telangana government of dismantling the ₹400 crore Siricilla apparel park project. They called it a deliberate attempt to waste public funds and stifle employment for women.
BRS leaders said the initiative, launched by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, was envisioned as a transformative employment scheme for women beedi workers. The project included developing an apparel park over 200 acres near Siricilla and implementing a unique “worker-to-owner” model.
According to party representatives, construction of nearly 50 sheds had been completed two years ago. Subsidised power looms were provided as part of the plan. This aimed to turn traditional weavers into owners, a model they described as “unmatched anywhere in the world.”
However, after Congress came to power, the scheme was allegedly abandoned. BRS leaders claimed the sheds have since fallen into disrepair, overrun with weeds and lacking any maintenance. Some units were reportedly repurposed for paddy storage, which the party described as evidence of the government’s “short-sightedness.”
“This is nothing short of an attempt to squander ₹400 crore of public money,” BRS leaders stated. They demanded the immediate revival of the scheme in its original form.
They reiterated that KCR’s vision was to convert weavers into stakeholders. There was an aim to develop Siricilla into a textile hub comparable to Tiruppur. Two export-oriented industries — Green Needle and Texport were already operational during the BRS regime. They were exporting goods to New York and employing nearly 2,000 women.
The original project plan aimed to provide livelihoods to at least 25,000 women, and make 1,500 weavers owners. The BRS warned that unless concrete steps are taken before Sankranti, a protest movement would be inevitable.
