SHRC seeks report from Hyderabad CP on banned Chinese manja use

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TGSHRC) has sought a detailed report from Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar on the continued use and sale of banned Chinese manja in the city, following multiple reports of serious injuries. The Commission has directed the submission of the report by February 26.

The action comes in response to a petition filed on December 30, 2025, by human rights advocate Immaneni Ramarao. The petition cited several incidents involving severe injuries and deaths caused by Chinese manja. This occurred despite the ban imposed by the state government.

Multiple injuries linked to banned kite string

Chinese manja, a synthetic kite string coated with glass and metal particles, has been banned in Telangana due to its hazardous nature. The petitioner highlighted cases such as a boy named Jaswanth Reddy, who was critically injured in Keesara. Additionally, a man named Jameel from Shamsherganj sustained a deep neck wound that required 22 stitches.

The petition expressed concern that the dangerous string remains widely available, including through e-commerce platforms. It continues to be used during kite-flying, especially around festivals like Sankranti.

Police act against illegal manja sales

Hyderabad police recently conducted statewide raids to curb the distribution of Chinese manja. Officials seized banned stock valued at ₹1.24 crore and arrested 143 individuals involved in its sale.

In a separate incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector Nagaraju suffered a severe throat injury after coming into contact with Chinese manja in Uppal. He was immediately taken to a hospital after sustaining heavy bleeding.

Authorities have reiterated that cases will be filed not only against sellers and buyers but also against users of the prohibited string.

The Human Rights Commission is expected to examine the police report. They may issue further directives to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and safeguard public safety.
