RTC service expansion planned to meet rising passenger demand

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Wednesday initiated plans for RTC service expansion to handle rising passenger demand under the Mahalakshmi scheme. The move followed a sharp increase in ridership across the state transport network.

Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar led a three-day review meeting at the Assembly Committee Hall. The meeting included in-charge ministers, district ministers, MLAs, MLCs and senior RTC officials. The RTC service expansion plan emerged after detailed discussions on field-level issues.

On the first day, public representatives from erstwhile Nalgonda, Medak, Rangareddy and Greater Hyderabad districts flagged transport concerns. Officials began compiling a comprehensive report based on these inputs.

From Nalgonda, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy and several MLAs participated. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Mahalakshmi scheme was being implemented successfully. He assured support for new buses, route expansion and resolution of RTC employee issues. He also suggested completing works at Kodad and Huzurnagar bus stations.

RTC service expansion focuses on routes and infrastructure

Public representatives raised multiple demands during the meeting. They sought additional buses on key routes and night halt services. They also asked for better frequency during school and college hours. Moreover, they stressed improved connectivity for rural and semi-urban areas.

Requests included modernisation of bus stations and construction of shelters in major gram panchayats along highways. In Medak district, leaders called for development of bus stations at Narayankhed and Pedda Shankaram Peta.

From Rangareddy and Greater Hyderabad, representatives flagged parking constraints and the need for temporary bus stations. They also proposed new routes in high-density areas and improved links to emerging residential colonies and educational institutions.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar directed officials to conduct route surveys and act on feasible proposals. However, he clarified that there was no proposal to establish new depots. The RTC service expansion would instead focus on improving existing services and infrastructure.

RTC officials said all suggestions had been recorded. They will prepare a detailed report for further action. The Minister assured that steps would be taken to strengthen transport services across Telangana through the RTC service expansion plan.

RTC Managing Director V. Nagi Reddy and senior officials attended the meeting along with public representatives from the concerned districts.
