Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Wednesday said the Telangana government is giving the highest priority to health and education, and is moving to restore public trust in government hospitals.
Speaking at the inauguration of AIG Hospital in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister called on all private sector doctors in the state to serve at least one month every year in government hospitals, citing it as a matter of social responsibility. He said such service, especially at institutions like NIMS and Osmania, would provide doctors with crucial real-world experience.
The Chief Minister said a long-term vision document, Telangana Rising 2047, is being prepared, where health tourism will be treated as a strategic sector. He said the state is aiming to build an exemplary healthcare system that can stand on par with global standards.
Revanth Reddy announced that Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu, a prominent oncologist, has been appointed as the state’s cancer advisor. He noted the rising incidence of cancer among women, and stressed that research and early preventive action must take precedence before treatment becomes inevitable.
To ease financial strain on patients, the government has raised the treatment cap under the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme to ₹10 lakh. He said ₹1,400 crore had already been disbursed through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in just the past 18 months.
The government is also planning to create individual health profiles for every member of women’s self-help groups. These profiles, linked to a unique ID card, will store full medical data of the woman and her family.
Reddy criticised the drift away from traditional family-doctor relationships under the current specialist-dominated model, calling for a more integrated system to rebuild trust between patients and the healthcare system.
Citing CII data, the Chief Minister said Hyderabad receives around 2.2 lakh international patients each year. However, the absence of direct air links from Middle Eastern countries is a barrier. He said the state is in talks with the Centre to resolve this issue.
He also called the Janani Mitra app a critical support tool for underprivileged patients. Referring to events like Miss World, he said they help showcase Hyderabad’s growing global stature.
