Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will present Telangana’s caste survey model to all Congress MPs on July 24 in New Delhi, as part of a push to build national momentum for the implementation of 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs).
The Congress headquarters is set to host a key briefing this week, with the Chief Minister, Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and several state ministers heading to Delhi on Wednesday for the event. They won’t be going alone – MPs, MLAs, and MLCs from Telangana’s Backward Classes communities have also been invited and are expected to land in the capital the same day.
The state legislature has already passed a resolution seeking 42% BC quota, and the cabinet has cleared an ordinance to implement the quota in local body elections. Revanth Reddy is aiming to gather nationwide backing to pressure Parliament for a constitutional amendment.
Party sources said the strategy hinges on the comprehensive household caste survey, which the government claims was conducted transparently and forms the basis for the proposed quota. Ministers will ask Congress MPs to endorse the state’s move and lobby for legislative approval at the national level.
Before the event, the Chief Minister is scheduled to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to explain the rationale for expanded BC reservations and seek their support.
