Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, issued an advisory warning medical shops against the illegal sale of prescription medicines without valid prescriptions.
The DCA said it noticed some medical shops selling prescription medicines without proper checks. These included habit-forming drugs and injections such as Mephentermine and Atracurium Besylate.
The department said misuse of prescription medicines posed serious health risks. Therefore, it clarified that several medicines fall under Schedule H of the Drugs Rules. Authorities placed habit-forming drugs under Schedule H1 and Schedule X due to abuse risk.
Licensed retail pharmacies can sell these medicines only against valid prescriptions from Registered Medical Practitioners. Moreover, the Rules require shops to keep proper prescription records and registers.
Prescription medicines may lead to strict action
The DCA warned that misuse of habit-forming drugs and prescription injections could cause severe harm. In many cases, overdose can lead to breathing failure, coma, or death.
The department reiterated that shops must sell Schedule H, H1, and X drugs only against valid prescriptions. Any illegal sale or diversion for misuse violates the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Therefore, the DCA said it would take strict action against violators. The department will cancel drug licences and launch prosecution under the Act.
Medical shops must stay alert while dispensing prescription medicines. They must also keep clear and complete prescription records as required under the Rules.
The DCA said strict compliance by all stakeholders remained essential to stop misuse. As a result, these steps aim to protect public health and safety across Telangana.
The department advised the public to use prescription medicines only as directed by Registered Medical Practitioners. It warned that self-medication can cause serious harm. Meanwhile, citizens were urged to report illegal sales or misuse to the DCA.
