Ponguleti criticises BRS over its record on the right to protest in Telangana
Hyderabad: Revenue, Housing and Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy criticised the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Wednesday. He questioned the party’s record on the right to protest during its previous tenure in government.
Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat, Ponguleti urged BRS leaders to examine their own governance record before criticising the Congress administration. He described the principal opposition’s language, tone and overall conduct as “deeply disappointing.”
The minister accused the previous BRS government of restricting public demonstrations and suppressing dissent during its rule.
Ponguleti questions BRS record on the right to protest
Ponguleti cited the previous BRS government’s decision to ban protests at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park in Hyderabad. He argued that the restriction deprived citizens of a designated venue for peaceful demonstrations.
In contrast, he said the Congress government restored Dharna Chowk soon after assuming office to protect democratic expression. “BRS leaders need to introspect before pointing fingers,” Ponguleti said.
He maintained that the previous administration had systematically suppressed dissent. Therefore, he questioned the BRS leadership’s criticism of the current government’s approach to democratic rights.
The minister also stressed that the right to protest should remain available to political parties regardless of their affiliations.
Ponguleti questions BJP ahead of Amit Shah’s Hyderabad march
Turning to national politics, Ponguleti criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled padayatra in Hyderabad on November 2. He questioned the BJP’s political consistency in organising marches in Telangana while opposition demonstrations allegedly faced restrictions at the national level.
According to Ponguleti, political parties should apply the same standards to public protests regardless of whether they hold power. He argued that democratic freedoms could not depend on the political identity of those organising demonstrations.
Meanwhile, the minister reiterated the Telangana government’s stated commitment to protecting democratic values and political expression. He said every political party had the right to organise rallies, conduct demonstrations and express its views.
However, Ponguleti maintained that authorities must apply these freedoms equally across political lines. He also emphasised that political differences should not determine whether parties could exercise their democratic rights.

సర్ (SIR) పేరుతో దేశవ్యాప్తంగా అర్హులైన వారి ఓటు హక్కును తొలగిస్తున్నారనే అంశంపై తక్షణమే ఎన్నికల ప్రధాన కమిషనర్‌ పదవి నుంచి తొలగించాలని కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ, ప్రతిపక్ష నేత రాహుల్ గాంధీ @RahulGandhi గారి నాయకత్వంలో ఢిల్లీ కేంద్రంగా వివిధ రూపాల్లో నిరసనలు, ఆందోళనలు చేపట్టినా కేంద్రప్రభుత్వం స్పందించడం లేదు.
న‌వంబ‌ర్ 1న కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ, ఇండియా కూటమి ఢిల్లీలో చేపట్టిన భారీ ర్యాలీకి లక్షలాది మంది తరలి వెళ్లేందుకు సిద్ధమవుతున్న నేపథ్యంలో కేంద్రం రైళ్లు కేటాయించక పోవడం బావ్యం కాదు.
రైల్వేలు కేంద్రంలో అధికారంలో ఉన్న పార్టీ సొత్తు కాదు. అవి భారత ప్రజల ఆస్తి. ప్రజాస్వామ్యబద్ధమైన నిరసనలను కేంద్రం అడ్డుకుంటే ఎస్‌ఐఆర్‌ ప్రక్రియతో పాటు రైల్వే శాఖ వ్యవహారాలు, ఇతర కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వ సంస్థల నిర్ణయాలపై ప్రజా క్షేత్రంలోనే తేల్చు కుంటాం.
ఇండియా కూటమి చేపట్టే నిరసనలకు ఆటంకాలు కల్పించే బీజేపీ నాయకులు వారు మాత్రం తెలంగాణలో పాదయాత్రలు చేపట్టాలని భావించడం ఎందుకో ప్రజలకు సమాధానం చెప్పాలి.
గతంలో ప్రజలు తమ సమస్యలను తెలియజేసేందుకు, నిరసనలు, ధర్నాలు చేపట్టేందుకు వేదికగా ఉన్న ఇందిర పార్క్ లో ధర్నా చౌక్‌ను ఎత్తివేసి, ప్రశ్నించే గొంతులను అణచివేసిన బీఆర్ఎస్ నాయకులు నేడు ప్రజాస్వామ్యం, నిరసన హక్కుల గురించి మాట్లాడటం పెద్ద హాస్యాస్పదం.చాలా విడ్డూరంగా ఉంది.
కాంగ్రెస్ అధికారంలోకి వచ్చిన తర్వాత ధర్నా చౌక్‌ను పునరుద్ధరించి, ప్రజలు తమ అభిప్రాయాలను స్వేచ్ఛగా వ్యక్తం చేసేందుకు అవకాశం కల్పించింది.
