Hyderabad: With a surge in accidents involving underage drivers, Telangana police have intensified their campaign against minor driving, warning both youths and their parents of stringent legal consequences. The move follows an alarming rise in incidents where minors, driven by recklessness or thrill-seeking, have endangered lives—both their own and that of others.
Police officials report that despite clear legal restrictions, minors continue to operate vehicles, often without proper training or awareness of traffic laws. This dangerous trend has prompted authorities to take a zero-tolerance approach.
When caught driving, minors are now being presented before the juvenile court, and in several cases, their driving privileges are being blocked until they reach 25 years of age. Additionally, vehicles used in such violations are having their licences suspended for up to one year, along with the imposition of heavy fines.
The crackdown doesn’t stop with the minor. Parents and guardians who allow their underage children to drive are also being held legally accountable. Police have started issuing legal warnings and are initiating cases against parents for enabling illegal driving and contributing to potential accidents.
Counselling sessions are being made mandatory for the parents of minors caught driving. Officers are educating families on the legal implications and the dangers involved in allowing underage individuals behind the wheel.
Authorities have appealed to the public to take the matter seriously and not hand over vehicles to minors under any circumstances. “A single mistake can cost multiple lives,” a senior police official said, reinforcing that public cooperation is essential to curb this growing menace.
