Needle left in abdomen during surgery at Huzurabad hospital

Hyderabad: A surgical needle used for stitching was left inside a woman’s abdomen during a C-section at the government area hospital in Huzurabad, Karimnagar district. The incident, which occurred on June 15, came to light on Wednesday.

Soumya, a resident of Mancherial, had travelled to her mother’s home in Jammikunta ahead of her delivery. On the morning of June 15, she developed labour pains and was admitted to the area hospital in Huzurabad by her parents.

Doctors performed a Caesarean section around noon, and she gave birth to a baby girl. During the procedure, a needle attached to the suturing thread slipped into the surgical site and could not be retrieved immediately.

Hospital staff conducted a search but were unable to locate it. Suspecting it might still be inside, they conducted an X-ray. The needle was found and removed before the sutures were completed, according to hospital superintendent Narayana Reddy.

He said both mother and child were stable. Responding to criticism, Reddy alleged that some individuals were deliberately exaggerating the incident to damage the hospital’s reputation.
