Municipal elections scrutiny ends, over 19,600 candidates in fray

Hyderabad: The municipal elections process in Telangana gathered momentum on Monday as election officials completed scrutiny of nominations across all urban local bodies.

Officials examined nominations filed for 2,996 wards in 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations. After completing the scrutiny, 19,608 candidates from political parties and independents remained in the race across the state.

This step marked a crucial stage in finalising the contest ahead of polling scheduled for February 11.

Municipal elections reach key stage after nomination scrutiny

As per the schedule, candidates who wish to exit the race can withdraw their nominations until February 3. After the withdrawal deadline ends, the Telangana State Election Commission will upload the final list of contesting candidates online later the same day.

The Election Commission will conduct polling on February 11. It will take up vote counting on February 13 and announce the results the same day.

Meanwhile, political activity has intensified across Telangana. The ruling Congress, along with opposition BRS and BJP, have sharpened their strategies to secure gains in the municipal elections. Consequently, officials noted a high volume of candidates contesting in most municipalities and corporations.
