HYDERABAD: In yet another tragic case linked to online betting, an MTech student in Hyderabad ended his life after reportedly losing ₹1 lakh through a betting app. The victim, identified as Pawan, was pursuing his MTech degree at JNTU in Masab Tank and was residing in Attapur’s Reddy Basti.
According to police, Pawan became addicted to online betting in hopes of making quick money. Initially, he saw some returns, which encouraged him to continue. However, he recently lost ₹1 lakh in a single bet, leading to severe distress.
In a state of deep depression over the loss, Pawan allegedly sold his iPhone and Royal Enfield bike to continue betting. He also used money sent by his parents for educational expenses. Unable to recover from the financial setback and the emotional toll, Pawan died by suicide, hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his rented room.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. They are looking into whether the ₹1 lakh was borrowed or came from family sources. Further details are awaited.
Pawan’s native place is in Gadwal district, where his grieving family is struggling to come to terms with the loss. The incident once again highlights the growing menace of online betting apps in Telangana, which continue to claim young lives despite government efforts to curb them.
This case adds to the alarming trend of students and young professionals—particularly from engineering and IT backgrounds—falling prey to digital gambling platforms, with tragic consequences.
