Hyderabad: Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesman of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), met Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R. V. Karnan on Saturday and submitted a memorandum on recent developments at Basheer Bagh. MBT general secretary Syed Mustafa Mehmood, Abdul Rahman, Altaf Naseeb Khan, Sikender Ullah Khan, Mohammed Saber, Shaik Rabbani, Shaik Zafer, Pasha Bhai and other MBT leaders accompanied him. He also met Hyderabad Assistant Commissioner of Police P. Praveen Kumar and K. Parashuram, Inspector of Abids Police Station.
The memorandum raised concerns over the alleged unauthorised installation of a large Sree Ram cut-out at a GHMC park. It also flagged the reported construction of a religious structure within the park. In addition, it cited statements by certain BJP and VHP leaders claiming that Basheer Bagh X Road would henceforth be called “Sree Ram Chowk”.
Khan urged the Commissioner to inspect the site immediately and verify whether the installation and construction had the necessary permissions. He asked for action if officials find any unauthorised construction or encroachment of GHMC property. He also asked the authorities to clarify whether the reported religious construction has official permission. He wants public parks to remain available for their designated civic purpose.
Khan questions unilateral renaming of public road
Khan questioned how any individual, political party or religious organisation could unilaterally announce a new name for a public road. He stressed that any official change must follow the prescribed legal and administrative procedure. The competent authority must also approve it.
He urged the Hyderabad City Police to examine statements circulating on social media about the proposed renaming of Basheer Bagh X Road. He asked them to take appropriate preventive measures so that the matter does not affect public order or communal harmony.
Khan appealed to GHMC and Hyderabad City Police to act fairly, impartially and strictly in accordance with law. He also asked them to prevent any unilateral attempt to alter the historic identity of Basheer Bagh.
