Hyderabad: Mayor elections continued across Telangana on Monday, with smooth proceedings in clear-majority bodies but tensions erupting in several hung municipalities.
While corporations and municipalities with a clear majority completed the process without disruption, hung civic bodies witnessed heated scenes. Major political parties intensified efforts to secure control, which led to protests and clashes in some towns.
In Mahabubabad district’s Torur, tension escalated as BRS and Congress cadres raised slogans against each other. The situation soon turned into a scuffle. MP Kadiyam Kavya, MLA Yashaswini Reddy and former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao reached the venue. During the commotion, Congress workers allegedly attacked the personal assistant of Errabelli.
Mayor elections in Torur head to draw amid equal strength
Torur municipality has 16 wards. BRS won nine, while Congress secured seven. However, ex-officio votes changed the equation. MP Kadiyam Kavya and MLA Yashaswini Reddy registered as ex-officio members and extended support to Congress. As a result, both parties reached equal strength. Officials will now conduct the Chairperson election through a draw.
Meanwhile, BRS alleged that Kavya’s name appears as an ex-officio member in Warangal as well. The party said it would pursue legal options over the issue.
In Vikarabad district’s Parigi municipality, the ex-officio vote also became crucial for the Chairperson election. However, Independent councillor Akkamma from Ward 1 reportedly went missing. Her family members and relatives staged a protest outside Parigi police station. They alleged that BRS leaders had taken her away after the election results.
