“Telangana has turned into a debt-ridden state” – Maheshwar Reddy in Assembly

HYDERABAD: During the Telangana Assembly session, BJP leader Maheshwar Reddy launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing it of turning the state into a debt-ridden economy. He alleged that despite Telangana’s rich revenue base, the government had accumulated massive loans over the past decade, pushing the state towards financial instability.

Reddy recalled that during the united Andhra Pradesh era, several welfare programs were successfully implemented. However, after the formation of Telangana, he claimed that financial mismanagement and unfulfilled promises have led to a mountain of debt.

He pointed out that over the past ten years, the state government had borrowed lakhs of crores, adding that 50% of the increased GDP was linked to loans, indicating excessive reliance on debt financing.

Maheshwar Reddy criticized the government’s flagship projects, such as Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha, claiming that lakhs of crores were spent on these initiatives without visible results. He alleged that the current budget lacks realism, failing to address the state’s actual financial condition.

Expressing skepticism over the government’s election promises, Reddy accused the ruling party of making unrealistic pledges despite being aware of the state’s weak financial situation.

He further slammed the government for failing to act against corruption, claiming that no cases were filed or major scams exposed during their tenure. He demanded accountability, questioning, “When will you recover the crores lost to corruption?”

Reddy also criticized the reduction or cancellation of welfare schemes, questioning if it could be considered real welfare. He specifically pointed out that the funds allocated for the Indiramma housing scheme were inadequate, stating that the budgetary provisions were far too low to fulfill the scheme’s objectives.

The BJP leader called for greater financial transparency and accountability, accusing the government of misleading the public with false promises while pushing the state deeper into debt.
