KTR slams Congress for pushing liquor sales, alleges betrayal of Telangana’s progress

Hyderabad: Former minister and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao accused the Congress government of turning Telangana into a “state of drunkards” by relying on liquor sales for revenue, claiming it has dismantled progress made under previous BRS rule.

In a sharp post on social media, KTR said the current government had set up liquor shops in every village and was exploiting the people’s vulnerabilities for profit. He alleged that, unable to generate revenue through governance, the Congress had resorted to expanding alcohol sales as a fallback.

KTR contrasted this with the BRS era, asserting that under former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, villages saw development, irrigation reached every field, employment opportunities increased, and households gained access to clean drinking water. He claimed women, especially in rural areas, had benefitted from these schemes benefits now being reversed.

He further criticised the government for increasing liquor licence terms to three years and raising application fees to ₹3 lakh. Citing official data, KTR claimed the average monthly liquor expenditure per person had risen from ₹897 to ₹1,623 in just 18 months of Congress rule.

He accused the ruling party of hypocrisy, saying those who once opposed liquor policies were now expanding them for revenue. “This is not Indiramma Rajyam it is a regime delivering alcohol to every doorstep,” he wrote.
