Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on Tuesday distributed 5,000 KCR Kits to new mothers at Telangana Bhavan, reviving the party’s flagship maternal care programme under the banner of his “Gift a Smile” initiative, ahead of his birthday on July 24.
Calling the move symbolic, Rama Rao said the initiative aimed to highlight the Congress government’s deliberate suspension of the scheme, which he credited with improving institutional deliveries and reducing maternal and infant mortality rates across Telangana.
He accused the Revanth Reddy-led administration of halting the kits solely to deny political credit to former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. “For 20 months, new mothers have been left without support simply because this government refuses to acknowledge KCR’s legacy,” he said.
Rama Rao contrasted the current state with conditions before Telangana’s formation. “Back then, people feared government hospitals. KCR Kits changed that image. Now they’re being blocked out of hate for KCR, not for any policy reason,” he said.
He condemned what he termed “vindictive governance,” arguing that withholding the kits harmed not the BRS or its leadership, but mothers and newborns depending on state assistance.
“Hence, I chose to distribute these kits myself and stand by some families, to spread a smile where the state has failed,” he said.
