Kothagudem mayor election turns crucial as KTR backs CPI

Hyderabad: The Kothagudem mayor election assumed political significance after BRS working president K T Rama Rao extended unconditional support to the CPI in the absence of a clear majority in the municipal corporation.

No party secured an outright majority in the Kothagudem mayor election, which triggered rapid political consultations. The CPI emerged as the single largest party in the corporation. Subsequently, K T Rama Rao personally called CPI MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao and assured support.

Confirming the development, Kunamneni said K T Rama Rao told him, “You have won, so we will support you.” The announcement added a new dimension to the Kothagudem mayor election.

Kunamneni stated that the CPI would not relinquish its claim to the mayor’s post under any circumstances. He described the opportunity as significant for the party. Moreover, he said the CPI would welcome support from any quarter to secure the chair.

He added that public service remained the party’s primary objective. Therefore, the CPI would not compromise on its bid for the mayor’s position in the Kothagudem mayor election.

In addition to BRS, several Independent corporators reportedly expressed willingness to extend support. However, Kunamneni said the party would hold an internal meeting within two days to decide its course of action regarding alliances and strategy.
