Hyderabad: BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruti President Kalvakuntla Kavitha has appealed to Left parties to support a state-wide rail roko protest on July 17 demanding 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes in education, employment, and local governance.
Kavitha met CPM state secretary John Wesley and senior leaders Sadhineni Venkateswara Rao, JV Chalapathi Rao, and K. Govardhan at Marks Bhavan in Adikmet to seek their backing.
She said the rail blockade was part of continued agitation under Telangana Jagruti and the United Phule Front. The protest, she said, is aimed at pressuring the Centre to act on reservation bills passed by the Telangana legislature.
According to Kavitha, both Houses had cleared separate bills enhancing BC reservations in education and jobs, and in local bodies. These were sent to the Centre three months ago but are yet to receive assent. She accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of failing to push for their approval in Delhi.
She said the Kamareddy BC Declaration had been the basis of sustained protests over the last two years, and the current Congress-led government was not showing seriousness.
Kavitha criticised the Chief Minister, claiming that despite multiple visits to the national capital, he had not taken up the BC reservation issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She called this inaction a betrayal of the BC communities.
She said the only way to compel the Centre to clear the pending legislation was through a public agitation like the upcoming rail roko. She added that Telangana Jagruti would coordinate with other parties and civil organisations willing to join the protest.
