Journalist housing society urges minister to approve land purchase

Hyderabad: The governing body of The Journalist Co-operative Housing Society Ltd (JCHSL) on Wednesday appealed to Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao to approve its request for land purchase. The land is intended to provide housing plots for 1,000 journalists who remain unallotted.

Society president Brahmandabheri Goparaju led the delegation, which included vice-president M. Lakshminarayana, general secretary Ravindra Babu, treasurer Bheemanagani Maheshwar Goud, and director Kamalakara Acharya. The group informed the minister that the society’s general body had passed a resolution to buy land. They planned to use a mix of society funds and member contributions.

Since its inception in 1964, JCHSL has developed three colonies. It has already allotted plots to several hundred journalists. However, more than 1,000 members are still waiting for land, with some waiting over 30 years.

The society also submitted a formal request to the Co-operative Department, in line with all regulatory norms. Goparaju explained this to the minister, emphasizing the urgency of the approval.

Additionally, the delegation discussed the legal implications of a recent Supreme Court verdict. They updated the minister on the status of existing journalist colonies in Gopanpally and Jubilee Hills. Furthermore, they shared plans to improve water and drainage infrastructure in Gopanpally Phase 3, recently approved by the society’s managing committee.

In response, Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao assured full support from the government. He said he would direct officials to expedite approvals for the proposed land purchase.
