Jitendra Singh inaugurates India’s first Animal Stem Cell Biobank

Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh on Saturday inaugurated India’s first Animal Stem Cell Biobank at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) in Hyderabad. The facility will store and preserve high-quality stem cells from multiple animal species.

The Minister also laid the foundation stone for a new hostel and residential block to accommodate the institute’s expanding research community. Alongside the biobank launch, NIAB unveiled five indigenous technologies aimed at boosting animal health, improving livestock productivity and safeguarding farmer livelihoods.

Boost to animal health and rural economy

Dr Singh praised NIAB scientists for delivering field-ready, affordable solutions. He said such innovations will help control zoonotic diseases, which account for nearly two-thirds of emerging illnesses worldwide, including COVID-19. Interacting with livestock farmers, he cited the government’s ongoing programmes to strengthen animal-based agriculture and rural incomes, aligned with the “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision.

He reiterated the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” principle, stressing prosperity for every village and community.

Research-to-field impact

Department of Biotechnology Secretary and BRIC Director General Dr Rajesh S. Gokhale said NIAB’s innovations empower farmers to be both food providers (Annadaata) and energy providers (Urjadaata). He said the work will strengthen India’s livestock wealth, improve food security and support the goal of Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

NIAB Director Dr G. Taru Sharma was commended for driving farmer-focused research and building strong industry–academia partnerships. Under her leadership, NIAB has advanced indigenous solutions to address challenges in animal health and productivity.
