Jangaon Chairperson election postponed amid protests

Hyderabad: The Jangaon Chairperson election was postponed on Monday after protests and political confrontation disrupted the proceedings at the municipal office.

Congress councillors staged a sit-in before the podium and demanded that officials halt the Jangaon Chairperson election. They insisted that authorities first complete the investigation into the alleged kidnapping of a BRS councillor. MP Chamala Kiran Kumar also urged officials to postpone the election until the probe concluded.

In response, BRS MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and party councillors organised a protest outside the municipal office. They accused Congress leaders of deliberately obstructing the democratic process.

Jangaon Chairperson election halted after rival protests

MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy alleged that Congress leaders disrupted a peaceful process and then blamed the BRS. He claimed that police officials intimidated a Muslim woman councillor. Moreover, he said the party would file complaints against the DCP and ACP and demand immediate action.

He further alleged that Congress exerted pressure on officials to stall the Jangaon Chairperson election. According to him, the election would have concluded smoothly without interference.

Congress proposed 22nd ward councillor Balamani as its candidate for Chairperson. Meanwhile, the BRS nominated 18th ward councillor Sugunakar. However, amid mounting tension and protests, officials postponed the election to a later date.
