HYDRAA intensifies fire safety checks across Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Fire Services Authority (HYDRAA) launched expanded fire safety checks Hyderabad-wide on Wednesday, targeting all commercial and residential zones after a string of fire incidents across the city.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath held a top-level meeting with GHMC, Fire, and Electricity officials to set an aggressive inspection plan. He directed officers to inspect furniture outlets, textile stores, and other commercial spaces. Any outlet that breaks fire safety rules will be shut down immediately and disconnected from power.

“Officials will place violation notices at the entrance of every non-compliant premises,” Ranganath stated.

Fire safety checks Hyderabad follow spike in city fires

The city reported over 36 fire accidents last year, averaging three each month. Highlighting this concern, Ranganath called for public support in spotting risks. People can call 9000113667 to report unsafe setups. They can also share videos, photos, or location details. HYDRAA will keep informant identities confidential.

HYDRAA has now banned storing goods in staircases, corridors, or cellars. Businesses must shift flammable items to warehouses in less crowded areas. Cellars are now restricted to vehicle parking only.

One fire incident in Nampally exposed critical gaps. A furniture shop had stored excess stock in the cellar, where a watchman also lived. During a fire, the watchman and three rescuers got trapped. This triggered a ban on housing staff in commercial cellars.

“All stairways from cellar to terrace must stay open and accessible at all times,” officials instructed.

Fire safety checks Hyderabad require working sprinklers and alarms

HYDRAA has made it mandatory to maintain working fire extinguishers. Employers must also train their staff to use them. All emergency exits must be clearly marked to allow fast evacuation. In addition, every building must have an active sprinkler system to douse flames automatically.

“We will not tolerate any safety lapses,” Ranganath said. He confirmed that the inspection campaign would continue across all sectors in the city without exception.
